Mar Asayan is a designer based in New York City.
Mar is a designer, researcher, and writer working at the intersection of design and the social sciences. They are committed and passionate about creating a just world for all. They believe design should be socially and politically aware and utilized as a collaborative tool to enable individuals and communities to thrive.
Mar graduated from Syracuse University where they double-majored in Fashion Design and Psychology. Their time at Syracuse was formative to developing their current philosophy around design as they actively practiced analyzing the importance of design to personal and collective psyches as well as how design can be used to influence mood and behavior.
Continuing their education at The New School - Parsons School of Design, Mar graduated with a Masters in Design Studies. Mar’s work continued to focus on the interconnectedness of design and the social sciences. This culminated in their thesis, “Design for Extreme Differences: A Consideration of Contemporary Design Practices in Design for Disabilities in the 20th and 21st Centuries” which analyzed the historic and present-day processes of designing for people with disabilities (including but not limited to inclusive design and universal design) and proposed new holistic processes for designing for and with people with disabilities as a way to create a radically inclusive future.
